We like Kannapolis, North Carolina!

We recently took a day trip to Kannapolis, NC and were very impressed.  The downtown area has recently undergone extensive renovations and features a streetscape that features murals, fountains, porch swings and more.  The town is very walkable. The new North Carolina Research Campus is located just outside of town– this is where we parked and enjoyed hearing church bells as we walked from our car to the center of town.  The town itself has its own soundtrack, with soft music playing from speakers hidden along the main street.

One very impressive feature of downtown Kannapolis is its baseball park.  The park is home to the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, a minor league team that is an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.  There was not a game on the day we visited, and we were able to walk into the park and stroll along the outer areas beyond the outfield.  This is a real community park and I am sure that it’s a great place to watch a ballgame.

Perhaps Kannapolis is most famous for being the hometown of the Earnhardt racing family.  Dale Earnhardt Plaza includes a larger-than-life statue of Dale Earnhardt and is a nice tribute to the great racer.
